When patients enter into the hospital, they have a care plan that has to be implemented once that it is done the care plan is reviewed for an outcome.

Every hospital is different but for the most part RNs are responsible for implementing doctors' orders administering medications. communicating with doctors and other disciplines for example phyiscal therapy, nutritionist, and others. Also we work with a nursing assisant most of the time that will take vital signs and report abnormal results. we are responsible for the continued stability of the patient if there is anything out of the normal the doctor is called and he makes the decision if he wants to make any changes.

So far as medications we can only administer what the doctor has ordered for that patient. if pain medication is not effective or if additional medication is needed the doctor always make the changes. if the patient starts to crash or code nursed have been trained to sustain the patient if at all possiple until the response team arrive. In nursing, we are certified in different areas in order to work specific areas such as telemetry , you will be trained on how to read strips. surgical we will be trained on how to take care of patients after surgery.

For patients recieving chemo therapy nurses will be certified to administer the medication for chemo and radiation therapy. For each type of nursing you choose, you are always trained. you should never be thrown out to the wolves without proper training. what you learn in school with theory and clinicals it is applied to your job. Salary and Benefits
Starting salary is $51,992 - $78,276 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $1,945 is available. To be fair, only a few CSU universities were offering doctorate in nursing. If there are more teachers with a doctorate, more nursing classes can be offered. And registered nurses can further their studies.

For example, Fresno State is planning on adding a doctorate to prepare future nursing educators to meet the needs for nursing classes.

Valley students can not wait for this new development. According to sources close to the university, the program may be launched in 2011.

In the meantime, our nursing needs are being met by traveling nurses and immigrant nurses. Go to any of our national hospitals, you are sure to find nurses from many foreign countries. Canadian nurses have been crossing over for a long time. You are sure to find many Caribbean, South and Central American nurses, African and Asian (philipino) nurses. Many of these foreign nurses come from many English-speaking countries. They have been doing a great job. Without them, we do not know where we would be. Even with the current focus on training local talent, the needs for foreign nurses will continue strongly for a long time.

Yet, they should regularly prescribe it as a way to lower blood pressure and prevent heart disease and diabetes, according to the American Heart Association on Monday June 23, 2003. Exercise often works well as drugs, yet doctors fail to advise patients to get off their sofas and walk, cycle or run, the group said, citing data from 44 different studies.

The American Heart Association and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among other groups, recommend 30 minutes or more of the moderate exercise such as brisk walking on most or all days of the week. U.S. News & World Report has named five California hospitals as being among the nation's best in the magazine's first ranking of children's hospitals by specialty.

The magazine is highlighting the 30 top-ranked hospitals in cancer, digestive disorders, heart and heart surgery, neonatal care, neurology and neurosurgery, and respiratory disorders.

California has three facilities that make the list: Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford, and UCSF Children's Hospital. They made the top 30 in all seven categories. As far as Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA is concerned, it made the top 30 in five categories: general pediatrics, cancer, digestive disorders, heart and heart surgery and neurology and neurosurgery. Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego was among the top 30 in neonatal care.

Nurses have been a part of the school setting since the late 1800âs when they provided student inspections to identify those with communicable diseases needing treatment. With the widespread use of antibiotics and vaccines to prevent common childhood diseases the role of the school nurse has evolved to a new level.Â

Students with chronic diseases, mental health issues and high-risk behaviors have driven school nurses to gain expertise not only in public health but also in pediatric and mental health nursing. Additionally, the need for nursing services in the school setting increased with the passage of Public Health Law 94-142 in 1975, requiring the mainstreaming of physically and mentally challenged students into the general student population

A later version of P.L. 94-142, known also as the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), did not specifically fund school nurses, but a ruling by the Supreme Court in 1999 confirmed that nursing services were to be provided by the school district for students needing nursing care. Under IDEA regulations, school nurses provide nursing assessments for students in special education programs as well as deliver nursing services for students in need of procedures such as gastrostomy tube feedings, clean intermittent catheterizations, tracheostomy care, and others.Â

Roles:Â

The primary role of the school nurse is to support student learning. The nurse accomplishes this by implementing strategies that promote student and staff health and safety. The nurse takes a leadership role in serving as the coordinator of all school health programs in the following manner:

Health Services -- serves as the coordinator of the health services program and provides nursing care
Health Education -- provides health education to students, staff and parents
Healthy Environment -- identifies health and safety concerns in the school environment and promotes a nurturing social environment
Nutritional Services -- supports healthy food services programs
Physical Education/Activity -- promotes healthy physical education, sports policies and practices
Counseling -- provides health counseling, assesses mental health needs, provides interventions and refers students to appropriate school staff or community agencies
Parent/Community Involvement -- promotes community involvement in assuring a healthy school, serves as school liaison to a health advisory committee.
Staff Wellness -- provides health education and counseling, promote healthy activities and environment for school staff

As the health services expert, the school nurse serves as the health professional for the school community. Some of the services provided include: illness and injury assessments and interventions; health assessments and participation in development of Individualized Education Plan for students with special needs; pediatric nursing procedures such as gastrostomy tube feedings, tracheostomy care, and catheterization; screening for health factors impacting student learning; activities to promote health and prevent teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, tobacco, alcohol and substance use and abuse; chronic disease management and education, administering medications; crisis team participation; recommending health curricula and guidelines for school district health policies; and serving as a health care provider liaison between the school and community.Â

Specialties:

School nursing is recognized as a specialty nursing area and has become more clearly defined with the development of standards of practice. Additionally, school nurses might further specialize their practice with a focus on children with special needs, early childhood programs, elementary or secondary age children, adolescents, or students with high-risk behaviors. Many states require school nurse certification either through the Department of Education or Health. National certification is available through a national board.Â

Practice Settings:

School nurses practice in schools throughout the United States and overseas military bases in settings that include:

Elementary schools
Middle schools
Junior High schools
High schools, Alternative schools
Private schools
Parochial schools
Pre-schools
Vocational schools

Qualifications:

The National Association of School Nurses recommends that all school nurses have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree and achieve School Nurse Certification.

The school nurse needs expertise in pediatric, public health and mental health nursing and must possess strong health promotion, assessment, and referral skills. School nurses also need to have knowledge of laws in education and health care that impact children in the school setting.Â

The school nurse works independently in the school setting to provide health care and education primarily to students and needs strong skills in critical thinking, decision-making, communication, individual and classroom education, and child advocacy.Â

Education:

Many educators responsible for hiring nurses are not aware of the various levels of nursing preparation. Consequently nurses in the school setting range from LPNs to PhDs, many with practitioner training and/or licensing. The National Association of School Nurses recommends a minimum of baccalaureate preparation for school nurses.Â

Salary Range:

In the1999-2000 school year, school nurses nationally earned salaries ranging between $20,000 and more than $70,000 across a range of job assignments. The majority of school nurses earn salaries between $28,000 and $49,000 based on a nine- month contract.Â

Typical Duties:
Performs case management coordination for members requiring extended access and/or treatment plan development for conditions or diseases that requires specialized medical care over a prolonged period of time, which is life threatening, degenerative or disabling. Works in partnership with the PCP and the company’s Medical Director in developing a medical treatment plan outlining the individual needs of the member and care coordination goals. Serves as liaison between the Provider network, and the company’s UM and QI staff.

“Egg freezing has long been the holy grail of the fertility world. Although sperm and embryos (fertilized eggs) have been successfully frozen for the purposes of fertility preservation for decades, the freezing of unfertilized eggs (oocytes) has only recently been successful.
In the past, difficulty with egg freezing was due to an egg’s tendency to develop ice crystals during the freezing process (which compromise the integrity of the egg), as well as hardening of the egg’s outer membrane, making fertilization difficult. Two recent breakthroughs have allowed scientists to overcome these problems.

The first is the development of a new culture media system that protects the egg from damage during the freezing/thawing process. The media system dehydrates the egg during freezing and rehydrates the egg during thawing, thereby minimizing the formation of ice crystals. The second breakthrough is a fertilization technique known as ICSI (Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection). With ICSI, the embryologist injects the egg with a single sperm in order to fertilize it.

While egg freezing is still considered investigational by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, by applying these new advances in cryopreservation, our scientists have realized a sharp increase in post-thaw survival rates (as high as 90%)1 and fertilization rates (as high as 80%)2. These improvements have led to pregnancy success rates from frozen eggs of up to 35% per embryo transfer,3 and have facilitated a dramatic increase in the number of babies born from frozen eggs to over 200 worldwide.4

You may be asking why more men are not nurses considering how much money they expect to make.

What is clear is that men have worked as nurses for many years in this country and elsewhere. What some industry insiders are saying is about what's keeping them out is the perception of male nurses. First, what needs to happen is an attitude change. Negative attitudes about male nurses need to change. Obviously, they are stereotypical behaviors that should not be condoned. For example, young boys grow up with the ideas that women are nurses. Even among adults, you will hear about stereotyped roles such as "a woman is a nurse" whereas a man is "a male nurse." Men as well as women will come to the nursing profession for the same reasons. Studies show that they want to care for the sick and injured people. They want a challenging profession, job security and higher standards of living. Some changes are overdue. To recruit men, we as a society need to change the image, culture and language of nursing.
